Garrison delivers his first public speech in Boston at the Park Street Church. In it, he calls slavery “a gangrene preying upon our vitals – an earthquake rumbling under our feet – a mine accumulating materials for a national catastrophe.” Garrison also calls for “a gradual abolition of slavery” to be led by the northern states.
